this is what juin blaize looks like!
Constance McMillen is like, a celebrity now, right? Rightfully so. I hate it when celebrities wind up being shitty people despite the fact that they create amazing art or whatever. Luckily, Constance McMillen seems like a pretty solid person through and through.
Apparently, Juin Baize, a transgender student from Itawamba Agricultural High School, was sent home (and later suspended) before the whole Constance’s prom debacle. This shit breaks my heart! It also makes me glad I live in Canada and was able to scrape through high school a relatively unscathed queer man and brings my own privileges to light. Anyway, NOT THE POINT. My point was: Constance is a pretty rad girl (the video in the first link is what I’m talking ’bout).
It’s stuff like this that really irks me and, quite frankly, pisses me off that discrimination on the grounds of gender identity is not protected against in some kind of constitution or legislation in whatever location (although big ups to Australia for a step in the right direction). And of course, by extension, it irks me that bull shit like this happens on a social level. I could go into the whole “is T part of the GLB?” bullshit too, but I won’t. Because the same forces aligned against the GLB “community” are aligned against the T “community” and we should all be one big happy queer family instead of a long, silly acronym. Bwa ha ha ha.
Seriously, though, poor Juin. He’s since relocated from Mississippi to Florida (boarding with family friends, iirc) and is getting an education via correspondence. His mother is still living with his grandmother and Juin’s two siblings in Mississippi and attempting to save money so she can relocate the rest of the family. Anyway, these folks are in financial trouble nonetheless and donations can be sent here via The Stranger in Seattle.
IDK if that link works, but the donation button is also in the Stranger article linked earlier.
note #1: and I’m still not down with Dan’s trans insensitivity.
note #2: Juin, afaik, still refers to himself with male pronouns~ Just to clear tha air about my pronoun usage.

In the interest of furthering discussion:
“I’m an anarchist”? seriously? oi vey. if he knew what he was talking about maybe i could take his justifications seriously. however, he’s just giving a bad name to the entire idea of anarchy (and sexual revolution for that matter, and he seems like he fancies himself a sexual revolutionary).
on anarchy: he fails to realize anarchy would devolve into savagery without respect for those around us. anarchy is the absence of a centralized ruling power (governments); not the absence of respect for others. i will be labeled (along with the other sensible ones) a prude for finding this inappropriate. however, as a student myself, i would no sooner want to study at a desk that had been defecated on than i would a desk that had been jizzed on (or covered in a woman’s fluids). furthermore, he’s obviously misunderstood the idea of “lack of property.” lack of property in anarchism does not mean i’m going to go out and use everyone’s toothbrush. it means that the means of production, sustenance, etc. and so on are publicly owned (afaik); not that i can go jizz on my neighbor’s couch.
on sexual revolution: proper sexual conduct should be between consenting adults capable of consenting under their own agency and free of coercion or duress. myself, and many many others, would not consent to having something we are required to use jizzed on. i don’t know where this boy has been or what is floating around in his jizz. beyond that, just, ew. i hope the burgeoning sexual revolution is more about respect than blatant stupidity. his idea of tolerance is skewed as well. i feel sorry for his lack of humanity if he is able to be tolerant of widespread genocide or rape.
lastly, if he thinks the fight for rights is useless then he is an idiot. we do not have these rights he claims we do. we are bodies (and minds) that live within structures that define our autonomy, safety, worth, and so on. i wonder if he has ever met a working class transperson or someone from a similar structural and social position, because i think his tone would change.
evidently (and this is only reinforced by the fact that this is posted on Queerty, which, imo, is pretty far from “queer” and closer to “we cater to gay, fit, and primarily white upper class men”) this is another case of structurally affirmed, white, middle-upper class, “good looking”, cismale bullshit.

this is what scum looks like!
This whole “sometimes I blog about queer/gender/blah blah blah shit” has really made me realize how … uh … stupid the world is. The newest stupid thing the world Canada is doing?
Contraceptives will NOT be a talking point at the G8 summit with regard to improving the health of mothers in poor countries. Why? Because contraceptives “don’t save lives.” WHAT.
Complications in birth and child bearing kill mothers. BEYOND that, if we’re trying to improve the health of mothers in poor countries is the distribution of contraceptives NOT a good idea? I mean, who cares about the agency and economic autonomy of these mothers? Pff, that won’t save lives. NO NOT AT ALL.
Most of this Pretty much all of this I stole from the Savage Love Blog. So shoot me!
On an entirely unrelated and “this was exciting a few weeks ago” note: Johnny Weir is so gay/awesome.

this is what a bigot looks like.
I’ve been meaning to write this for awhile now.
Constance McMillen. Do I even need to post an original source? Probably not. All I have to say is bullshit bullshit bullshit.
When I first heard that Constance’s prom was canceled because the school board thought two lesbians wearing tuxedos would be “too distracting” in the learning environment for these children almost adults I didn’t believe it. But it’s true! I’m just gonna go ahead and point out the obvious (which has been done by probably about 5816318381 other people since this whole debacle started):
a) It’s prom. Which is … uh, you know, held when students are graduating at the end of the year … isn’t it? Right. Distracting in a learning environment. But … aren’t they graduating from that environment?
b) Canceling prom is obviously way less distracting than letting two lesbians go. Oh, yeah, I’m sure all these kids won’t be pissed that their prom is canceled and be brooding over that for the last few months of their high school career.
c) ANY and ALL of the harassment and/or violence that this poor girl is now going to inevitably face at the hands of her class mates is going to be the sole responsibility of the school board and the heterosexists that run it. I am hoping against hope that nothing horrible happens to this girl (but in a town of 4000 that is willing to cancel an entire event to stop lesbians from going, it seems unavoidable).
d) This is just bullshit. Through and through. Indescribable, ridiculous bullshit. The clock on my computer says that it’s March 12, 2010, but I can’t believe that. No way. This is some medieval witch hunting shit.
e) Citizens have been encouraged to fund their own private prom because only rich straight folks would be allowed there (and they could bar Constance from attending without facing a lawsuit).
I’m finding it difficult / infuriating to write about this, let alone find anything that hasn’t already been said. I’m the furthest thing from a nationalist, but this was one of those very rare times when I was like “Wow, I’m glad I’m from Canada and could get away with wearing a dress to my prom.”
Anyway, here is a link to Itawamba School’s Superintendent Teresa McNeece’s facebook page where everybody else is busy telling her what a horrible person she is (and rightly so).
And HERE is the facebook group “Let Constance Take Her Girlfriend to Prom!” that everyone still on facebook should join to show this lass support.
LASTLY, Dan Savage has been all up on this shit for awhile and has posted the information of various faculty members so that people can make their displeasure known:

… Now, I’m off to write some angry letters.
note: the bittersweet thing about this is that it has been amazing to see the rush of support / solidarity amongst queers and them “straight folk” in the face of such blatant and disgusting discrimination.

Queer Itself gave a holler about my O Canada! post so I guess I’m returning the favor. Anyway, while surfing his/her/hir blog, I came across this little post about that new Hyundai commercial. And it has lesbians!
I remember seeing that on tv a few days ago and once again being unimpressed. It’s a little more tasteful than that stupid GoDaddy commercial, that is still as annoying/offensive/stupid as the first time I saw it, but I still have to wonder (and doubt) about the intent behind the Hyundai commercial.
Somehow I don’t think the Hyundai PR people were like “Oh man, those lesbos totally are totally invisibilized by the media we should give ‘em a little exposure.” No, somehow I think the white, lipstick smeared, high-heeled booties are for the boys. Yes, yes, I know lesbians like that stuff too (since they like other women and all) but … I dunno. The impression I get is still a resounding “HEY STRAIGHT MEN BUY THIS CAR BECAUSE UH I DONT KNOW LESBIANS LOOK LESBIANS!”
Well, here’s to still waiting for a commercial / billboard / magazine spread / any PR campaign that treats queerness as auxiliary to the fact and not central to the entire campaign. A campaign that doesn’t use lesbianism as a selling point. Or, oh perish the thought, featured queer people of colour? We get it, Absolut Vodka, gay men drink a lot. I don’t know. I think I might be asking too much, since, really, any queer representation in advertisement is simply just to target a niche, no?
Oh the thin line walked~
